KITCHEN & FOOD RESOURCE COORDINATOR
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The 86 Hunger Kitchen and Food Resource Coordinator is a part-time staff position primarily responsible for meal planning, production, and training of kitchen staff and volunteers and facilitating food rescue operations.
We are looking for someone with back of house experience (preferably in a management position) in a full-service restaurant, who can uphold our current standards and passion for high-quality vegan food made for our free meal program, the Blue Plate Project.
In addition to this experience, our ideal applicant will be detail-oriented, well organized and comfortable managing a small team, and able to pivot focus while transitioning between volunteer management and cooking. This position requires a creative self-starter who can collaborate effectively with other staff and be an inspirational leader for volunteers.
Job Type: Part-time, 20-25 hours/week
Pay: $28.00 per hour with an expected $1.00 raise after four months
Start Date: Expected near Jan 15, 2023
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Ensure continued operation and support of 86 Hunger kitchen and food rescue activities: Collaborate with Chef to write recipes, prepare high quality large-batch meals in a restaurant kitchen, source in-kind food donations, purchase ingredients, and manage volunteers.
Work with the Chef of Acorn Cafe to plan plant-based recipes to be served from the restaurant’s kitchen, using donated or rescued ingredients where possible
Order and purchase materials and supplies and properly submit receipts
Collaborate with Volunteer Coordinator to screen, onboard, train and support kitchen and food rescue volunteers
Oversee volunteers personally to ensure quality and safety standards are met during all kitchen volunteer shifts
Be ultimately responsible for ensuring availability of free Blue Plate Specials
Create and facilitate regular trainings and workshops for volunteers to build skills
Support the planning and implementation of policies and procedures for kitchen and food rescue work
Ensure all volunteer shifts and hours are scheduled and accounted for using online volunteer management program, Timecounts
Work with Volunteer Coordinator to keep updated records for kitchen volunteers, including Food Handler’s Cards
Help to maintain a positive, professional, and rewarding work environment
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
BOH restaurant experience required
Management experience preferred
Background check required
COVID vaccination and willingness to wear a mask while working
Somewhat flexible schedule
Ability to stand for 4-8 hours and lift 35+ lbs

Patience and attention to detail
Acorn Community Cafe at 769 Monroe St., plus traveling required for pick-up of donated food and purchase of meal ingredients.
Our group was founded in 2020 under the name Lunch People, as a small community effort to serve high quality free meals to school kids and their families (or anyone who asked) during the early pandemic. In early 2021 our founders quit their restaurant jobs to open Acorn Community Cafe, and in 2022 our group of volunteers formalized a board of directors and became a 501c3 nonprofit organization, the 86 Hunger Foundation. We are currently running two programs from Acorn Community Cafe: The Blue Plate Project for free hot meals, Wed-Sun from 10am-12pm and the Free Market Project for free nonperishables, Wed-Sun 10am-5pm.
86 Hunger is a small team of two staff and around 50 volunteers, including 10-20 kitchen volunteers who work solo or in pairs. Our new Kitchen and Food Resource Coordinator will be responsible for operating the Blue Plate free meal program and will work closely with Acorn Cafe’s Chef and 86 Hunger’s Executive Director, Volunteer Coordinator, and volunteer group.
